When it comes to comfort, generally rolled garage flooring or soft garage floor tiles make the best garage floor.  Many of the other flooring options are made from a hard plastic type material that is more comfortable than plain concrete, but not nearly as comfortable as the rolled garage floor.

If safety and cleanup are your primary reasons for looking into garage flooring, the best garage floor for you is most likely rolled garage flooring.  One of the biggest benefits of rolled garage flooring is that it is easy to clean.  Aside of the seems, rolled garage flooring does not allow spills or leaks to penetrate to the floor below.  That means spills are contained to the rolled garage flooring where they can be easily taken care of.  In addition because rolled garage flooring is not secured to the floor it can be dragged out of the garage and sprayed down occasionally with a garden hose.  Rigid garage floor tiles are usually solid or perforated.  The perforated types allows spills to drain below the tile to the floor below.  This can be beneficial in some applications but ultimately the difficulty becomes cleaning up spills below the tile.  Unless you pull up part of the floor, the spills will remain under the floor forever.  Even solid tiles are not installed tight enough where spills don’t leak down between the seems.

Everyone has their own reasons for wanting to install garage flooring, but deciding which is the best garage floor is strictly up to the individual making the purchase.

If you are looking for Garage Flooring That’s Inexpensive and Easy To Install, check out our article on that subject.  If you are more interested in Garage Floor Tiles, we have an article on that too.  Whatever type of flooring you choose you will need to determine how much flooring you need to purchase.  If you have a rectangular or square garage, that calculation is quite simply length x width.  For example, if your garage is 24′ x 20′, then you simply take 24 x 20 and determine that your garage is 480 square feet.  If you were going to purchase rolled garage floors then the your best option would be to choose a roll that is 10 feet wide and purchase the length you need for each 10 foot increment.  In our example 2 rolls of garage flooring that is 10 feet wide by 24 feet long would be perfect.  But what if you garage is 24′ x 22′?  If that is the case the best option would be to purchase rolled garage flooring that is 7.5′ wide and then buy 3 rolls at 24′ long.

In each of the examples above it is important to know the width and length of your garage.  Many of the garage floors available comes in various patterns and are generally rolled out from the back of the garage to the front.  By doing this, the seem will run along the length of the garage.  To determine the width of the rolls you will need you simply take the width of your garage and divide it by the various widths of flooring available.  The most common widths of rolled garage flooring are 7.5′, 8′, 9′ and 10′.  If your garage is 22′ wide then the best choice would be 3 rolls of the 7.5′ width flooring.  That would give you the least amount of waste when you install your floor.  Three rolls at 7.5′ wide would cover an area 22.5′ wide providing only 6 inches of waste.

When it comes to garage flooring, many of you may have heard or seen the epoxy floor coverings that are available today, possibly even on TV. You see what looks like a simple process and beautiful results. What you don’t see or hear is that most epoxy floor coverings fail and the process is extremely time consuming and difficult. The biggest reason the epoxy garage floors fail is adhesion, they simply don’t stick well unless the surface has been properly prepped. That doesn’t sound bad, right? Wrong. Here are some of the things you need to do to “prep” for an epoxy floor:

• Be sure the concrete is dry. This does not mean to the naked eye but truly dry.
• Remove ANY and ALL chemicals, grease, oil, etc. Remember, we are talking about a garage. All of these items are abundant in the garage and VERY difficult to remove.
• If the floor was previously painted, all the paint should be removed. Good luck with that.
• The garage surface may need to be ground down to expose the clean concrete underneath.

• The concrete was not completely dried. Water is a major problem with epoxy garage floors.
• Humidity can cause problems with epoxy and cause the floor to fail.
• The epoxy must cure quickly. If not, blisters in the floor may appear.
• Salts that are deposited from the concrete as it cures can effect the bonding of an epoxy garage floor.
• Surfaces generally expand and contract with heating and cooling. These expansions and contractions can cause cracks in the epoxy flooring. Once there are cracks the floor loses its protective coating and it nice appearance.

Easy Installation of Roll-Out Garage Flooring – 30 to 60 minutes – Minimal tools!—No adhesives required!

1) For best result, unpack and install product as soon as possible after delivery. The sooner product is removed from packaging, the sooner it will lay flat on garage floor after installation.

2) Sweep and clean garage floor. Wipe up any oil and chemicals from floor before rolling out product.

3) Unroll product on garage floor. Edges may be butted together or overlapped (see Overlap Note below) for seamless appearance and floor protection. Initially, the Garage Floor Protector will have curl marks due to being rolled on a core or folded in a box for shipment (this is normal).

Unroll option 1: For lay flat results, unroll Garage Floor Protector in the sunlight on a clean driveway. The warmer the conditions the quicker curls will straighten out and lay flat. Use wide push broom, push air out from center and work your way out (side to side and length to length) Repeat if necessary. Place on garage floor when desired and repeat broom out.

Unroll option 2: If you wish to unroll product directly on the garage floor, sweep garage floor clean of debris and unroll Garage Floor Protector. For best results, start unrolling process at the garage entrance; finishing at the back of the garage. Note: In cool to cold conditions it may take 72+ hours for most curl marks to lay flat depending on the temperature. Be sure to push out air with broom (It is OK to park your car on it during this time).

Overlap note: G-Floor® Flooring that is 10′ wide, has an “overlap flap” (approximately 1.5″ to 2″ wide) of unpatterned material running down one side. Flooring that is 9′ wide or less,has no “overlap flap”.

4) Allow mat to relax and lay flat. For custom fit, allow product to relax in place before trimming around edges and corners.

Note: If product is used under extreme temperature conditions, such as direct sunlight or unheated garages, the product may expand or contract as much as 2% after laying flat. For custom fit, always allow product to relax before trimming around edges and corners.

5) Trim edges with sharp scissors or utility knife.

6) Taping around edges is not necessary. This product can expand or contract up to 2% with temperature changes. It is best if the product is allowed to ‘float’ freely on the floor. If you choose to tape the seam between two floor protectors, we recommend using indoor-outdoor carpet tape.

Note: Due to the manufacturing process, patterns of two pieces of flooring may not match or align exactly along the seam when two mats are laid side by side.

Product Cleaning and Care of BLT Roll-Out Garage Flooring

• The garage rolled flooring surface is easily washed with soap and water. Product can be easily washed off inside or outside of garage. Brush or sweep with cool water using a broom or sponge squeegee. Mild soaps and normal household detergents may be used. Do not leave harsh detergents or chemicals on product or wash into sewer system. Some people prefer moving the product outside and hosing it off.

• Normal household vinyl cleaners may be used to increase longevity and to remove stubborn debris. Certain automotive vinyl products may cause surface to become slippery. Use a non-slip vinyl protector such as a clean-and-shine floor cleaner.

• This is not a stain-proof product—certain dyes, inks, rubber tires, and chemicals may cause permanent staining. Some of our customers have reported that spray-on Brake and Tool Cleaner, found in many auto parts stores, will remove some stubborn stains without damaging the product. However, use of brake and tool cleaner may cause product discoloration. Never use harsh chemicals such as tar remover or kerosene on rubber garage floors.

• After cleaning, apply a coat of floor polish for vinyl floors to add a long-lasting, high-luster finish, even to older garage floor protectors.

NOTE: Leaving chemicals on the product for a long period of time may cause damage. If concrete floor has been treated with certain sealers prior to mat installation, sealer may break down over time and adhere to back of mat without causing damage to mat. Some motorcycle kickstands may cut or damage this product.

Any floor surface can become slippery in the presence of moisture and debris. Proper care and cleaning of vinyl flooring will reduce the likelihood of slips and falls.
